"Pale and interesting”, I say.
"Pale and boring" says he.
“Classic” I protest.
“Crap” he concludes.
I have finally conceded. Even my argument that white is the only colour you can never fall out with has been quashed. Why? because I’ve done exactly that.
I’m over playing safe. Life is too short. Soon enough I will have died and gone to heaven where only white is allowed. White like the clouds, white like the angels, white like the ashen faces of every other poor empty soul who’d rather be down on Earth going mental with a paint pot.
I need to seize the opportunity to fill my days (and my rooms) with millions and squillions of different colours. And like the kid in the sweet shop that I am, I want to taste them all.
It’s not a big post today because I need to be out collecting ideas and stuffing my pockets with colour charts in B&Q. I just wanted to know where you stand on the white vs colour debate?
Now don’t get me wrong here, I have spent the last 20 years loving white interiors. It’s not that I can’t see their serene beauty and their classic good looks. I love the way white lets everything else in the room stand out. Would these cane chairs enjoy quite as much limelight if they were in a colourful room? Doubtful.
I love the light of white. I love the sense of space it creates, I love its simplicity. But suddenly it all feels a bit clean. Know what I mean?
Colour is screaming at my door, “Let me in!” And I must say whenever I’ve agreed, it has not disappointed.
Colour takes guts. It takes creativity. It takes time to get right. And after 20 years of playing safe, choosing white suddenly feels like picking a limp piece of white sliced bread from a smogersboard of tastier options. So colour, I am ready for you. The bib is off and I’m tucking right in. My dining room needs you. And come to think if it, so does my plate.
