The shops are mental for macabre and new season homewares look like they’ve been smuggled out of Hogwarts. Halloween has been supersized and it’s coming to get you.
I couldn’t be a goth if I tried. But I can do darker hues, wicked wit and the odd well placed skull. In fact it’s the perfect antedote to my girliness and stops my home being too toffee apple sweet.
So I’m channelling my inner Morticia Addams as I take a look at the current gothic interiors trend and seek out a few decorating tricks and treats that have got me under their spell.
Those 19th Century dolls were a spooky looking squad. All that porcelain skin and uncomfortable clothing. But since Brahm Stoker chic is big news in the fashion word, it’s only right that we pile on the drama at home too. Think plush velvets, fancy fringing and a bit of posh parody to give a modern twist to the ancestral vibe.
2) Body parts
There’s something decidedly “Chucky" about these babies heads which may have you diving behind the nearest cushion. In fact random bodily bits are popping up all over the place and they're a great way to nail freaky home fashion without it costing an arm and a leg…. see what I did there?
2) Beastly birds
I once came home to find two filthy fat crows perched menacingly on my curtain pole having fallen down the chimney. For that reason anything with big pointy black beaks sends me into an instant flap. Including these fellas who, nonetheless are working their black magic on the interiors scene.
3) Day of the dead decor
Family friendly freak chic I can do! Mexican Day of the Dead skull cushions are the perfect way to nail girly goth. There’s some great ones online with price tags that shouldn’t scare the grown ups too much either.
4) Laboratory lighting
I’m a bit Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to lighting - I love a big fancy chandelier one minute and I’m pining over simple industrial lightbulbs the next. A recent trip to Jamie Oliver’s 15 restaurant in Islington showed just how the two styles could live in perfect harmony.
These vintage style William and Watson lights are great for creating that cool Dr Jekyll laboratory vibe. They’re currently on offer to My House Candy readers too, simply visit www.williamandwatson.com and enter the ‘housecandy’ offer code at checkout to receive 15% off but hurry - the offer expires on November 30th!
5) Wicked Walls
Weird and wonderful is where it’s at in the field of wallpaper. These are my absolute freakin’ favourites:
